THE WORKSHOP

This page keeps you updated on what's going on in the shop and what models are coming up next. All the pictures below are from what I'm working on right now. I added this page so I won't have to edit the construction page continuously. As better construction shots become available they will gradually replace the older ones on the construction page. The waiting list has grown very long. Currently 18 models in construction or waiting to be built or about 36 months of work. I am trying to find more time in my schedule to build the models and I have placed my first orders for mass-produced parts (Does a set of 12 bronze castings qualify as "mass-production"?) to speed up the process.

This new model is a 1/6 scale copy of the guillotine used in Senegal until the early 1900s. The design is inspired by a single known photograph of an execution in St-Louis.
6/24/10: Pictures of the 1792 style wood frame. Steel mouton and blade with unusual shape. The mouton is equipped with small brass rollers that guide it on the inside surface of the posts and not in the tracks as on the Berger model. External springs on mounts attached to the posts stop the mouton. The tracks are lined with zinc plate.
7/10/10: The release mechanism typical of a 1792 machine. The Senegal guillotine was bolted to a frame with wheels which allowed it to be stored, fully assembled, in a tall shed and be brought out only for executions. The mobile support frame idea was also used on guillotines on Ile Nou in New Caledonia and in Carcassone. The steel lined lunette is common on 1792 machines that were upgraded in the mid-1800's.
7/17/10: Added forged steel hooks for the ropes, per 1794 design sketch by T.Schmidt. Added bascule assembly with reverse U support leg. Added leather straps with coarse steel buckles to the bascule plank.
