HIGH GRADE BERGER MODELS

1907 BERGER - STAINED OAK - 1/6 SCALE

This is my most recent 1/6 scale high grade model of the Berger guillotine. Although it is not a top grade model, it is still a pretty accurate rendition of the original machine. In particular, the mouton assembly, the mechanism and lever, the lunette lock and the galvanized head bucket are as good as any I have made for my best models. Some minor concessions, such as the use of angle iron braces and simple square-head bolts simplify the model to make it more affordable. This model was built for a client in France in the spring of 2009.

1907 BERGER - PAINTED OAK - 1/6 SCALE

There are quite a few innovations on this model. It is the first to use a very precise laser-cut mouton on which the rollers sit inside small individual "wheel wells". The pulley, machined from 10mm aluminum, is a first of a kind as well. It is based on the shape of the real guillotine pulley and replaces the variety of commercial pulleys I have been using to date. The base frame, with full penetration tenons, is copied directly from the Swedish guillotine. The mechanism door uses a concealed hinge. The metal braces are secured with square nuts on threaded rods themselves threaded into brass bushings. This gives the machine a bit of a pre-1900 look. A friend of mine applied flat black Duracoat gun finish to many of the parts that I usually would leave shiny. The model seems more ominous with this black finish. The wood is painted rust brown, aged with a flat black paint film and rubbed down with linseed oil. I completed this project in the July of 2007. The photo gallery below shows various design details.
